Unknown May 29, at AM. Havent cleaned the carb. I didnt think sitting for a month or so would warrant that! I hope not! Please say it aint so! Yes the battery WAS strong enough Will clean the air filter tonight and crank her over.

My 99 had a similar problem this summer but it only did it when hot it was the ingintion module in the nose cone. If this happened only because it sat for a month you have 3 likely possibilities if the battery strength isn't the issue. Fuel - something got stale or contaminated or clogged. Spark - some connector became badly corroded enough to make a borderline or good connection bad or moisture is intermittently shorting out a connection.

Spark - a wire became cut or otherwise damaged - think mice. Charge the battery. I'd replace the plugs. Crank the engine a bit with the plugs out and grounded to clear out the cylinders. Install the plugs and start it. If the BANG still happens the timing is off. Originally Posted by Kev M. Might want to check the compression. If a lifter is stuck open it can backfires. But your jetting does sound a tad lean for your set up. Find all posts by cphilip. The factory setting and jetting are set way lean anyway so they can pass the EPA test. If it is a lean condition you don't necessarily need to go bigger on the jets. You can take up to 3 full turns out with the mixture screw. Give it a try. The time now is User Name. Remember Me? This is on the assumption that everything else on the bike is running well. The most common way to intentionally cause a backfire on a Harley Davidson is to replace the exhaust system with aftermarket parts. Another popular way among bikers is to rev the engine and then turn the ignition back on. Backfiring intentionally can lead to bent valves and blown exhausts. Even though intentional backfires are frowned upon by bikers, they can be amusing for other people.

The stock muffler and exhaust on a Harley Davidson are tuned in such a way as to decrease the sound and effects of a backfire. Another common practice to cause a backfire is riding the bike in gear to revs upwards of 3,RPM. The ignition is then turned off and then on again with the throttle turned all the way up. Revving the bike high then turning it off fills the exhaust canisters with fuel. When the ignition is switched back on, the fuel and hot gases are ignited, and the explosion or backfire occurs.

This has to be done with some timing because backfiring is unpredictable. When done excessively, this can lead to bent valves and a blown apart exhaust pipe. A lean air or fuel mixture from the carburetor of a Harley Davidson results from drastic changes in the pressure. Backfiring during acceleration typically signifies air in the intake system of a Harley Davidson.

This means the system has developed an air leak, which results in extra air going in the engine. The extra air unbalances your engine leading to backfires. On the other hand, backfiring is simply burning off of the excess fuel that is unused during combustion. This sound is normally from the exhaust, and it signifies a faulty combustion process.
